The
Creuse Valley
This mountain and raging river from the Massif Central covers almost
255 km before joining the Vienne, near Châtellerault. Certain
portions have maintained interesting water sites but the dams and
the bed that broadens make it very accessible for canoers and kayakers.
It crosses the Brenne, a nature zone rich in animal and plant species.
The ponds are used by migrating birds. This heritage is managed
by a Regional Nature Park and ecomuseums… At the edge of the
Brenne, the Animal Park La Haute Touche enables deer to live in
semi-liberty.
Early human habitation, guided by the natural wealth of the region
and its position as a crossroad, left a great many traces behind.
Take a plunge into the past by discovering the prehistoric collections
of Grand-Pressigny and the Gallo-Roman site of Argenton-sur-Creuse,
the ancient city of Argentomagus.
You’ll also come across a mystical region, by stopping at
the romanesque church of Gargilesse or Ruffec abbey…
Descartes is the final stop in the Creuse Valley. This was the birthplace
of René Descartes, 16th century philosopher and mathematician.
A museum in his birthhouse illustrate his life. |
